  • Ordinance Enforcement: Solely on Chief Wendell Major

Ordinance Enforcement: Solely on Chief Wendell Major

Question: Who controls the Tarrant Police Department and is responsible for making sure ordinances are enforced?

Answer: As this question is repeatedly posed to our administration, the answer is simple: The Tarrant City Council led by Mayor Pro Tem Tracie Threadford and Chief Wendell Major.

On July 1, 2024, the Tarrant City Council passed an ordinance stripping our administration completely from the Tarrant Police Department. Tarrant Municipal Ordinance 1162 is clear who the Tarrant City Council holds responsible for any concerns regarding ordinances being enforced and any resulting criminal charges:

“[T]he Chief of Police shall be responsible for the general supervision of the City of Tarrant Alabama Police Department…

Officers of the Police Department shall have the authority to enforce all applicable laws, ordinances, and regulations within the City at the direction, and under the supervision of the Chief of Police duly appointed by the Tarrant City Council in conformity with the laws of the State of Alabama….

any and all provisions in an existing ordinance of the City of Tarrant Code of Ordinances that conflicts with or are contrary to any term or provision in this Ordinance shall be and are hereby repealed.”

Any and all provisions saying anyone else is responsible were repealed by our council. Although we may not have authority to direct our police department in enforcing various laws and ordinances, including littering concerns and reducing increasing crime, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Mark Pettway has continuously provided his resources to combat crime within our city at the request of our administration.

Unfortunately, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has no jurisdiction to enforce municipal ordinances.

  • Crime is ⬆️ Accountability is ⬇️: Violent Crime on the Rise

Although our administration was removed from exercising any supervision over the Tarrant Police Department, we plan to do what’s necessary to get this increase in violent crime under control. We’ve documented:

August 6, 2025: Shooting into occupied business (no injuries)
June 5, 2025: Two adults injured from shooting (minor injuries)
April 19, 2025: Adult shot during ambush shooting (critical injuries)
January 22, 2025: Adult shot (homicide)
November 29, 2024: Adult shot (moderate injuries)
September 22, 2024: Juvenile shot (moderate injuries)
June 3, 2024: USPS vehicle shot (minor injuries)
    January 17, 2024: Adult shot
December 18, 2023: Juvenile shot (reported as accidental)
    November 6, 2023: Adult shot
August 1, 2023: Shooting into occupied residence (no injuries)
July 19, 2023: Shooting targeted at adult (no injuries)
April 10, 2023: Three adults shot
February 1, 2023: Adult shot (critical injuries)
October 5, 2022: Two adults shot
November 12, 2022: Adult shot (critical injuries)
September 15, 2022: Adult shot (moderate injuries)
August 29, 2022: Juvenile shot (critical injuries)
July 31, 2022: Two adults and one juvenile shot (critical and minor injuries)
November 11, 2021: Juvenile shot (homicide)
July 21, 2021: USPS worker shot (moderate injuries)
July 8, 2021: Four adults shot
May 28, 2020: Adult shot (critical injuries)
May 1, 2020: Juvenile shot (moderate injuries)

There is a clear increase in violent crime without any sign of changing the way our police targets this issue. We tried to make revisions to get this under control by re-structuring police leadership – we were then stripped of all authority over the police department.

August 26, 2025, let’s get back to working to reverse this trend – accountability should be up and crime should be down. Re-elect Mayor Wayman Newton to keep up the fight. • Crime is ⬆️, Accountability is ⬇️

We’ve had a significant focus on, and priority, for your safety. Even though the City Council may have taken the police department from us, we will continue holding them to their word to reduce crime in Tarrant.

🚩 Not trying to sweep a two-year-old’s homicide or chemical endangerment under the rug — Then why say you don’t have a crime? Why didn’t you mirandize or interview the suspect? Why was the case closed? Why was the case sealed from other officers in the department?

🚩 Not closing felony cases that haven’t been assigned or seen by a detective to hide crime — Then why tell us that if you never send a case to a court, charges will never be brought?

🚩 Not downgrading charges to hide an increase in serious crime — Then why were a list of these felony cases, later prosecuted when discovered, closed before even being assigned or seen by any detective?

🚩 Not to mention the cases where evidence was unusable, unavailable, or non-existent because video footage, witnesses, and other evidence disappears over time.

You told us to hold you accountable — not accept your ways of making it seem like crime is down in Tarrant.

August 26, 2025, the people will choose safety, and properly addressing crime, over politics. Let’s keep pushing! #StillStanding2025 #TarrantFirst #Accountability #YourSafetyFirst

  • Endorsement

Today I am proud to share an unexpected but very welcome endorsement from my opponent.

    In her own words:

🗣 “Every time he tries to bring something positive, they bring it down.”
🗣 “If you introduce it, there probably won’t be a second. If I introduce it, I’m sure there will be.”
🗣 “I would say I agree” when asked if the council has shown poor leadership.

We may not agree on everything but we can agree on this. I have been working hard to bring positive change to Tarrant even when the council tries to block it.

Thank you Madame Mayor Pro Tem for your honest words and your endorsement.

On August 26 vote for the Mayor who has been working so hard that even his opponent says she is with him.
